How long does ear training take?

Post by JamesP »

I've been using the 'Functional Ear Trainer' app for about three days, putting in around 90 minutes each day. I've noticed some improvement, but the differences between the sounds are so subtle that I still get them wrong frequently. Is this a long-term commitment? Should I be using a different approach? I have a guitar tutor, but our sessions are only 30 minutes each week, and I'm not sure it's the right fit for me since he's the only option in town.

It’s important to approach ear training with a clear objective in mind. Define what you want to achieve, whether it's playing by ear, understanding complex harmonic structures, or improvising. This clarity will guide your practice and help you measure your progress effectively. Remember, consistent practice is more valuable than hours spent without direction.

If you're focused on the technical side of things, I'd recommend supplementing your ear training with some interval recognition exercises. Knowing your intervals can drastically improve your ability to identify chords and melodies. There's some great software out there, but don't forget about practical application; try playing along with tracks and identifying intervals in real time. This can be more beneficial than just using an app.
