Best Order for My Pedalboard in Live Settings?

Post by Seanbean »

Hey folks, I'm gearing up for a few gigs and I've got a bit of a dilemma with my pedalboard setup. I've been experimenting, but I feel like my effects chain might not be optimised for live performance. Right now, I’ve got a tuner, overdrive, a delay, and a reverb. I usually put the overdrive first, but then I wonder if that's the best way to go about it. Should I be putting the delay before the reverb instead? How do you guys usually approach your signal path? Any tips or tricks you've learned from experience that could help me out would be much appreciated.

Sounds like you’re on the right track with the overdrive first. Usually, that helps maintain clarity when you’re pushing the amp. As for the delay and reverb, I’d personally recommend putting the delay first and then the reverb. It gives everything a nice, spacious feel without muddying the mix too much. Have you had a chance to test this out at home?

I’d agree with Pete, mate! Overdrive first is standard and works well for most setups. But it’s interesting about the delay and reverb—I've also seen setups where they swap those around depending on the sound they're after. If you're after a more ambient sound, maybe try the reverb before the delay for a bit. Just experiment and see what fits your style best!

Both solid points there! I keep it simple myself; overdrive first, then delay, then reverb, but I think it really depends on the sound you’re after. Sometimes, less is more if you’re playing live. If you’ve got a good amp sound, you might find you don’t need as many effects as you think. Just make sure your board is easy to manage during gigs!
