How has music theory impacted your guitar playing?

Post by Newmusician93 »

Hey everyone! So I’ve been playing guitar for a few years now, mostly by ear and just figuring things out as I go. Recently, I decided to dive into some music theory to get a better grasp on what I’m doing and why it works. I’m curious, how has learning theory changed your playing? I feel a bit lost trying to connect the dots between scales, chord progressions, and improvisation. Sometimes it feels like it complicates things more than it helps. Did you find that understanding the theory made you a better player? Or did it just give you a new set of tools to use? Any insights would be great!

I played for years without really thinking about theory, and when I finally started to learn it, it felt a bit overwhelming at first. However, once I started connecting the dots, it made my playing so much more intuitive, especially when it came to improvising over different progressions.

I hear you, mate! When I started digging into theory, I felt like I was stuck in this maze of scales and modes. But honestly, having that knowledge helps you know what fits over what, especially in metal where you’re balancing all those crazy riffs. It’s like having a roadmap; once you know where you’re going, it’s easier to shred over any progression!

That's a good point, MetalPlayer. Understanding theory has certainly helped me in structuring my solos and even in composing music. However, I think it's vital to remember that theory is just a tool. If it complicates your playing, don’t hesitate to step back and play by ear for a while. Sometimes the best ideas come from just having fun with your guitar without overthinking it.

I feel a bit the same as you, Newmusician93. I found it quite interesting to learn about chord progressions and how they work together, but sometimes it can feel like you’re drowning in info. My advice? Try to apply what you learn in small doses. Even just figuring out one scale and using it for a week can help solidify those concepts without overwhelming you.

Absolutely agree with you Pete! Music theory can feel daunting, but it’s really just a way to understand the music you love better. I found that once I learnt a bit about the major and minor scales, it really opened up my improvisation. Just take it slow and let it enhance your playing rather than bog you down. It’s all about enjoying the music!
