Getting in Sync with the Drummer
Getting in Sync with the Drummer
Hey folks, I've been jamming with a new band lately, and I’m finding it a bit tricky to lock in with the drummer. We’re playing some upbeat rock tracks, and sometimes I feel like my timing is just a fraction off, especially during fills. I’ve tried focusing on the kick drum, but I’m still not quite nailing it. Do you have any tips or techniques that help you find your groove in band practice? Thanks!

Have you tried playing along to a metronome? It might help you get a better feel for the timing with the drummer. Just a thought!

I’ve been there too! When I was jamming with my mate, we’d focus on the groove of the song rather than individual parts. It really helped us lock in tighter, especially when it came to fills.

Absolutely, it’s all about feel. Try to listen to the drummer's dynamics; sometimes it’s not just about the kick but the overall energy they’re putting out. Jamming to some classic tracks together might also help you both find your pocket.

That sounds tough! How do you even practice with a drummer? Should I just get a friend to help or what?

Jamming with mates is a great way to practice timing! Maybe if you’re struggling with the fills, you could simplify them a bit until you find your groove. Keeping it straightforward can work wonders.

Yeah, I think I might try just playing the basic chords at first. Did you guys start out simple too?
