Best Methods for Transcribing Guitar Solos?

Post by Satch2 »

Hey everyone, I’m trying to get better at playing solos by transcribing them myself, but I’m a bit stuck on how to go about it. I’ve tried slowing down tracks using software, but it feels tedious, and I’m not sure if it’s the best way to develop my ear. Do you have any strategies or tools that you find really help? Also, how do you balance between writing it out in tab versus standard notation? Any tips would be appreciated!

I think starting with simpler solos can really help develop your ear. I usually just listen to a phrase a few times, then try to play it back without looking at tabs. It might be a bit frustrating at first, but you'll get the hang of it. As for transcription, I prefer tab—it's easier for me to get the fingerings right.

That sounds really helpful, Sam! Do you have any specific solos you recommend for beginners? I’m still trying to figure out how to even listen for the right notes.

I agree with Sam! Slowing down tracks is good, but you might find it easier to focus on smaller sections. I often use YouTube for that, as you can adjust the playback speed. And I find writing it in tab is much quicker for figuring out how to play it, though I do try to stick to standard notation for more complex stuff.
