How does Joe Satriani make that squeel?

I love listening to Satch - hopefully one day I will be as good as him. I just do not understand how he gets that high pitched noise with his lefft hand on the whammy bar?

It sounds amazing and I would love to do it.

I have heard it may be an artifical harmonic??????

Hi Treepot

You are correct. It is indeed an artificial harmonic.

To do this, as you go to pick a note, allow your thumb to slightly touch the strings. If you do it in the right place you will get a high pitched noise - this is a harmonic.

Doing this in different places you will get different notes.

Joe usually does his scream by 2 harmonics at the same time on the B and G string.

He brings his left hand to the whammy bar and dives the bar then brings it back up and above the original pitch.
