Which stringed instrument for scottish music

Hello there. I would like to learn a stringed instrument which will allow me to join in playing rythm/backing with friends who play the scottish accordian and fiddle. Ideally I would want to learn either the banjo (which type?), the ukulele or the mandolin. Would any of these instruments allow me to play backing chords to scottish music?
I currently play the bagpipes which you will agree are not the most indoor friendly instrument so any help on this subject would be most appreciated.
