Amplifier for electric guitar

I currently have an acoustiv guitar and a Marshall AS 50 amp - which is really an acoustic amp. I am about to but an electric guitar. Should I:

1, Get another amp? (bearing in mind the extra cost) If so, which one?
2. Use the current amp and merely use some pedals for overdrive, distortion etc? If so, which one? I like the muse of EC, MK, JT etc
