Techniques for Downstrumming on the 'And' Beat

I'm curious about the technique for strumming down on the 'and' beat. Do you break the natural swinging motion of your arm when doing this? Also, what’s the correct term for the 'and'?

In professional settings, precision is essential. The 'and' is often referred to as the upbeat. Focus on your wrist motion; a partial strum allows for a smoother transition. Practice this in various tempos to get a handle on it.

To downstrum on the 'and', think about a subtle wrist motion rather than a big arm swing. You want to create a flicking motion that allows your pick to barely graze the strings or miss them entirely on the downbeat. This will set you up perfectly to hit the 'and' cleanly.
