How can I train my ear?

It's great that you're already making music! Remember that many musicians find it easier to identify pitches relative to other notes or chords. Try to practice relative pitch exercises—there are many resources online. And don't stress if it doesn't come overnight; it's all part of the journey!

How long should I practice D.E.A. and (m) chords before moving on?

I’d say aim for consistency over duration. If you can practice a little every day rather than cramming for a few hours once a week, you’ll see better results. Make sure you’re focusing on form and sound; that’s what really matters at the end of the day.

how can do i use outside notes

It’s all about balance. Outside notes can add color to your playing, but they work best when you have a good grasp on the inside notes. Try to incorporate them gradually. Listen to some players you admire and see how they do it.

Barre Chords

It sounds like a combination of technique and possibly setup issues. Experimenting with hand positioning can definitely help, but if you’ve ruled that out, it might be time to check the guitar itself. A little adjustment can sometimes work wonders. Just keep at it; you'll get the hang of it!

How did Mozart learn theory?

There’s definitely a balance here. While Mozart had a unique talent, we can’t discount the extensive training he received. It’s a reminder that even the best musicians have their foundations built on study and practice. Maybe it’s a combination of both that makes a true artist.

Was anyone else surprised at how many songs are so simple?

I think there’s a balance to it. Simple songs can be incredibly powerful, but complexity has its place too. Both can evoke strong emotions; it just depends on how they’re crafted.

Chords not belonging to their home key

There’s a lot of debate here, but at the end of the day, it boils down to your musical intention. An A major can add color to your piece, but be mindful of how it fits within your progression. Explore it, but don’t forget to trust your ears.

Learning metal. Which songs do I need to learn to get me going?

I've been playing for more than 30 years. Played blues, rock, and jazz. My son took up the guitar and after a year, saw how serious and focused he is. I taught him what I know, but he's a metal head. So I want to start learning metal too. Oh, he also mentioned yesterday he wants to focus on ...

Always having music playing in your head?

More annoying is that I've been a drummer for over 20 years, and I'm constantly hearing rhythms and tapping them out with whatever part of my body feels like being involved. Often it's my teeth. Apparently this is a relatively common occurrence with drummers, but it doesn't make it any less annoying.

Cracking the Fretboard: Tips and Tricks

I’ve been self-taught for a while, but I always felt like I was just memorizing shapes and "guessing" where the right notes were when I tried to solo. Lately, I've been using a fretboard trainer app called Noteable to gamify learning the actual notes and intervals, and it’s honestly been a huge help ...

3. They experimented heavily in the studio, and it's notoriously hard to get the exact recorded sound for that exact reason. Weird tunings, layers, speed shifts, tape distortion, etc.

Band prospect rejected me because I don’t have a strong grasp of reading lead sheets.

I want this to be the last time I’m rejected for this reason. I’m not mad, it’s their project and they can do whatever they want, I just never ran into this problem with an originals based band before and wasn’t prepared for this to be where they drew the line.
