I think that learning on you're own is good, but finding other guitarists to play with is also important, not necassarily lessons, but even someone to learn along side of.

Some good Irish folk songs:
Amazing Grace
Fields of Athenry
Black Velvet Band
Finnegan's Wake
Auld Lang Syne

If ya look up Dropkick Murphys, Emerald Rose, Flogging Molly or The Bleeding Irish, they have some great stuff thats very Irish/Celtic.

About a month and a half ago I saw Fall of Troy, Clutch, and Coheed and Cambria live, that would have to be my favorite show. Fall of Troy opened, they were not very good, set list was lame, sound was terrible, and it was like every two seconds Tommy was hitting the repeater pedal. Clutch came out and really got things rolling, I've never seen someone drink so much on stage, they must have been hammered by the end of the show lol! Then Coheed came out, and they were absolutely incredible. They did about half stuff from the new album and half older stuff, but they included their cover of Iron Maiden's "The Trooper" which was amazing. They did some fan favorites like "Junesong Provision" and "Devil in New Jersey" but what really made the show special was the encore. The band played "Welcome Home" then "On the Brink" but they stretched on the brink out to 30 minutes, and played numerous guitar, bass and drum solos, voicebox effects, weird effects with this rod, all kinds of crazy stuff. In the end they played a 2 and a half hour set... It was like a religious experience.

I wouldnt say ATR is basic guitar, listen to the track "Six" It was the first I heard from them. I don't know if I'd say they are the greatest metal band ever or anything, but Six is one of my favorite songs, and they have soem awesome other songs to such as "Tattered on My Sleeve" and "The Deepest Grey." I would highly recommend them.

P.S. The song "six" is featured on Guitar Hero 2, thats how I heard about them!

heh, I consider my Calluses badges of honor! The mark of a serious guitarist! Back on topic, you can bend and open string by applying pressurenear the bolts at the top of the guitar, makes a cool sound!

Im a heavy metal guy... So I gotta go with electric. I use Guitar as stress relief and so I can come home and start playing some chugging riffs and solos and feel much better about my day default/smile that being said, if I had a decent acoustic guitar I'd probably play that to, as there are some classical pices i'm quite fond of.

I have a good ol' stratocaster... It's not the highest of quality (its an Austin) but its done me well over the years, and it is pretty easy to play. I'd recommend it for beginners!

I use 9's because 8's are to light for me, I snap em' to easy. 10's are a little heavy, so I too think 9's are a happy medium default/smile

I started playing blues guitar around 10, but that didn't really stick, I hated the lessons. Then when I was 14 I picked it back up again and started self teaching, been playing ever since. I guess it was probably a summer camp that got me playing again, but it would have happened anyway.
