The breathless list of possibilities in the article make it difficult to know exactly which doom to prepare for. Anyway, the Mrs. seems to keep a years' supply of food in stock regardless, so I hope to have some time to make adjustments when it happens, whatever it is.

I'll shed no tears over his departure. But what's really interesting is the boxes of computers and other stuff they gathered at the same time. That gift will keep on giving.

What are you using for a mic/sound input? I've been looking into using an external mic in my iPod touch.

Re: Site Design (8 replies, posted in Misc)
I'd certainly keep "guitar forums" in the name for that very reason, just add to it a little. Have you checked out the other music and guitar forums, to seek inspiration?

Re: Site Design (8 replies, posted in Misc)
Forums tend to be pretty pedestrian graphically as a rule. Nothing wrong with a tweak, of course, but I wouldn't spend too much time on it unless you have a strong idea.
I might suggest a more distinctive name, something to set it apart for a new visitor, more than the simple "Guitar Forums" does now. Maybe bring over your logo from the main site, and title it "Olly's Guitar Forums" or the like.

Re: wiki leaks (10 replies, posted in Politics & Economics)
I'm all for exposing corruption. But a lot of it seems to be diplomats doing their jobs, being frank with each other and giving their bosses some professional opinions. The leaks seem to upset the apple cart for no good reason other than to foment chaos. The response from other countries has been muted, probably because they know their cables would reveal the same kinds of things.

Heard this on NPR on the way home.
USDA Marketing department: "Eat more cheese!"
USDA Nutrition department: "Eat less cheese!"
Truth: Eat cheese. Just not too much.

Topic: How well do "guitar" skills transfer to other guitar-like instruments? (5 replies, posted in General Chat)
Just curious how much "guitar-fu" transfers over to other instruments in the family, e.g. bass, mandolin, banjo, uke, etc. Not that you'd necessarily gig with it, but that you feel you can say you "play" it passably.
I'm just a guitar beginner myself. But in a similar vein, I play wind instruments, and trumpet transfers pretty easily to most other valved brass, though of course the further you get away from the trumpet (e.g., tuba) the harder it is to master a truly good sound without a fair amount of concentrated study.

Re: free market or interventionism? (5 replies, posted in Politics & Economics)
Food stamps are coupons for, well, food. (It used to be paper coupons, but now they are usually debit cards.) They can be used at any grocery store like cash, but only for food. States administer them, though the federal government supplies much of the money. Qualification is based on income, which needs to be at or below poverty level. Children can qualify even when their guardians cannot, depending on circumstances. The average food stamp allotment is $133.12 per person per month, which is not a big food budget in the US.

Football. American style that is. I'll watch baseball only in the playoffs if I team I follow is in them. Never watch hockey or basketball. But something about golf on TV is oddly mesmerizing...

Re: So how's Obama doing internationally? (5 replies, posted in Politics & Economics)
Liberal Democrats don't think he's doing enough. Hard line conservative Republicans think he's destroying the country. Those of us in the middle wish the extremes would STFU with the hyperbole--especially the right--and the let the man do his job.
Or, business as usual in the US of A, lol.

Well, maybe a few live overseas who are Americans
Your viewpoint is relevant to the question, too, being "out there" as an observer. So exchange rate is an indicator of performance? Interesting metric!

Topic: So how's Obama doing internationally? (5 replies, posted in Politics & Economics)
This forum has a pretty good non-American presence. What's the average "not-American's" impression of Barack Obama these days? Good? Bad? Mediocre? I'm hungry what's there to eat?
