Interested to know peoples opinions on this as well.

I am sure if the Chinese guitar was designed with quality in mind it could be a better guitar than Gibson £ for £ - however often the reason that we import Chinese guitars is because they are cheap and I think this is because, as well as the labour, the components used are the cheapest possible as well!

Unfortunately one of the negatives of the site moving up in the search engines is that we are likely to get more spammers - this is a typical example - newly registered, one post that is irrelevant.

If you see posts like this please click the report button and the user will be banned and their posts edited or deleted.

We don't  want spammers here!

I would like to point out that had Instructor not reviewed this product, this post would have been deleted as spam!

Good review - thanks for taking the time to give your opinion.

I got to see it.  I didnt feel like he did much in terms of teaching....

It was more about his philosophical approaches to things.  I didnt expect much, usually these kinds of things tend to be long on hype and short on substance.  I really question the practicality of a Steve Vai Technique course at Berklee, other than to draw fanboys and play off his name.  I would love to be a fly on the wall...it seems like a money making idea rather than addressing a real need.

Instructor

I totally agree with you.

Steve Vai is a great guitar player and has clearly dedicated a great deal of his life to his guitar study - but anyone can do this, if they want to put in this much time and dedication - no Steve Vai course is going to reduce the necessary hours required to get to his standard of playing and composition.

Study the way Lick Library does this, and you'll see what I mean.  I think they are the best bar none when it comes to showing someone how to play a song Danny Gill in particular is the best.

I must agree that Danny Gill is a fantastic player and teacher. I have a lot of his material that I found really useful.

However I find the fact that Iain has recorded this video ultra helpful as well. It is far better seeing someone play than, for example,  just looking at some tab that may or may not be correct!

Without speaking for him, I don't think that it is his intention to become a guitar teacher - more just sharing some of his knowledge to help others which I think he has done a top class job of!

Drawing on Olly's suggestion C to A...I wouldn't be inclined to agree with it, simply because there aren't many songs that I can think of that you're going to NEED to play C to A.

Now, if he meant to say  C to Am, that's a different tune all together, and you definitely want to learn that, as they are used all the time.

To be honest I did not give it much thought from a musical perspective, more from the point that it gets two of your fingers moving while one can remain anchored but you are absolutely right with what you say and C to Am is used a lot and sounds good!

So is the issue that the guitar body is just too big for him or is there also a difference in the neck size on a 3/4?

I tried the new 1 watt Blackstar last week, when one of my reps swung by the shop, and it was pretty cool...had quite a tone to it.  All tube, and a lovely clean and gain stage, with reverb.

And how loud did it have to be to get that tone? I understand even 1 watt is extremely loud?

Hey Instructor - I hope you are keeping well and nice to see your drop by! How is your guitar academy coming along?

So far I have been working a lot on the search engine ranking of the site to allow us to be found. The site is coming along nicely in the UK rankings  - usually between positions 3-5 for some decent terms and now we are creeping up the second page of the worldwide listings.

Better prominence in the search engines will hopefully allow the site to be found much more easily.

Which actually brings me to question - what search terms would you use to find a forum like this? I have primarily been working on "guitar forums" and "guitar forum" but perhaps there are others that people might search on. Of course, there are loads of terms that relate to certain categories or posts as well but I am primarily thinking generically.

There are a few other things that I have lined up as well to entice more users!

I am really grateful that the same 5 guys stick around, and that I have the opportunity to get to know each of them via this forum. Some forums are just packed with pointless posts and you rarely get to know anyone as well as you do on here - however, there is no harm in increasing the quality visitors to keep the conversation alive and giving us all something to discuss!

I completely forgot about these. I did buy them and I have them in my desk drawer at work!

The reason that I didn't rush to put them on is that the tubes the strings sit in seem rather long - like around 1 inch from memory, and I think that will look a bit odd on my guitar. I don't know why they make them so long?

But these would defo solve your issue James

Hey Roger and welcome to the forum.

What kind of music are you into?

Just checked out your site and it is looking good. I like the part where you talk about solos being made up of short melodies/phrases. It is the most overlooked part of a solo for a newbie!

Yes he hasn't been on for a while - though there hasn't been a lot going on! I know I keep saying it, but things will change shortly!

Where are you Alun?!

I would also start putting those chords to use.

Start learning some simple songs like some Beatles songs. Either check online resources or get yourself a copy of the Beatles Fake Book which contains the lyrics and chords of loads of their songs.

They have loads of simple songs with simple chord changes and also they have some more complex ones so it really works for the beginner!

Hi Rich

I assume this is with your left hand (assuming you are playing a right handed guitar) if so you would want to keep your nails short on this hand. If they are already short then it will most likely sort itself out the more you get used to playing.

Changing chords mainly comes down to practice and practice will make perfect. Some chords are much easier to change between as they have common notes - for example the transition between Em to G should be easy as you index finger stays where it is an acts as a pivot. C to A is a similar situation.

Use a metronome and set it to a speed where you can play, for example, 4 strums of a chord on each beat and change successfully in time for the next 4 beats. It doesn't matter how slow it is but then slowly speed it up ensuring that you only move on when you have it completely clean. This is a great way to monitor your progress and I am sure you will see improvements every day.

If you don't already have one, you can easily download a metronome to use on your computer!

Hope this helps and keep up the good work!

Did anyone get to see the live "webinar" lesson that Steve Vai did the other day in an attempt to get a guiness world record for the largest live online guitar lesson?

I managed to tune in for the first half of it but didn't stick around long enough to see if he actually achieved it?

Maybe if we were getting 50,000 hits a day the ad would be worth it! For now, it just gives a little colour!

Hi Everyone

As we all know since Christmas it has been quiet around here so I would like to take this opportunity once again to thank you all for your continued efforts in keeping our little community alive!

Things are going to change very soon as I have some ideas that will soon be implemented to get the conversation going again.

As you will be aware, I have changed the header section of the site. I felt it needed a little brightening. I hope that everyone is ok with it.

Regarding the advert on the right, this was primarily to fill space so please do not think I am trying to make money out of you guys as I am not! If it offends anyone that much, it will be removed!

Anyhow, I would always welcome anyone's comments, feedback, ideas etc on ways to improve things.

Thanks again guys!

Olly

Well keep us informed as to how you get on and, as I say, I will certainly bear it in mind for future!
