After a long few months of listening to the whole of Thunder's music catalogue I'm starting to feel the need to find something fresh.

So what are you guys into at the moment?

I'm into quite a lot of rock styles but it cannot have vocals that scream or road so much you cannot hear what they are saying and also the band needs to utilise guitar solos!

Any recommendations?

Anyone on here playing in front of any audiences any time soon?

Anyone got any experience on Antares Autotune?

I have known about it for years but primarily for the unnatural interesting sounds it can create.

Also it had a bit of media attention with some xfactor sh!te where it sounded obvious that it was being used.

But can it be used to really bring a slightly out of key vocal back up to pitch sounding completely natural?

I want to sing on my future songs (if I ever write them) but I can't sing and it could be worth tinkeing with to get something half decent out of something pretty bad!

I like the song and I like the idea of the false beginning. It certainly can add real interest.

I'm still finding it a struggle to get a song down. I really must concentrate on trying to get something down that is complete, rather than just small ideas that don't develop further!

What kind of things did you/do you find the most difficult with playing guitar?

When I was learning I struggled with using my pinky for quite a while - that took ages to retrain myself after years of playing without it. Now I am pretty ok with it.

Nowadays the main reason that I cannot play something is the ability to correctly phrase when playing at any speed. I think this is a lifelong issue to try and overcome for me!

I haven't talked about effects for a while.

I spent a lot of money and a lot of time collecting a load of various pedals - mainly Boss pedals.

Since getting into the recording I find that I am currently using one pedals - the Boss DD-2 digital delay. I have the signal going through the wah but I haven't used it as yet.

There is something nice about keeping it simple and I know that I can add effects using Cubase if I really wanted to,

So what effects are you guys using and are there any effects that you would ultimately like to get in the future to complete your setup?

When I play electric at the moment I am going into my Marshall that is miced up ready to record.

I was using VSTs in cubase but I could not get a lead tone I was happy with. The Marshall is better though really needs to be cranked to get a really decent tone but so far it is the best that I have.

So what is the first thing you plug into when playing guitar and are you happy with what you get from it?

Certainly looks nice! I haven't really considered getting a custom guitar before but it does sound appealing. You would have to have a lot of confidence in the person/people you trust to do the job though!

What are you working on guitar wise at the moment or generally playing?

I have been really busy with a lot of things recently but I have managed to get some decent guitar playing in. I have been working hard at this song

Which has taken up pretty much of all my guitar playing at the moment. I am still along way away from being able to play it but I think I have memorised all the parts now so from here it is just practice practice practice!

So what are you guys doing when you pick up your guitar at the moment?

If anyone is wondering, I just moved the "everything else" category to the "Playing Guitar" section

Yes sounds nice Alun. I think James should add his lyrics and you should turn it into a tune. You two could be the next Lennon/McCartney!

Always nice to play a guitar with brand new strings on! Shame it never seems to last that long!

Thanks for the response.

I remember when I was younger, probably around 6 or 7, I started to learn the piano. I enjoyed it to a degree but I didn't practice and I never appreciated the skill I was developing. Eventually I gave up the piano for the guitar.

It was only when I hit around 18 -19 when I decided to really concentrate and make and effort with the guitar.  I think at this age I really had self motivation and could see the end goal I was trying to reach. This made it a whole lot easier for me.

My older Son turns three next week and it got me thinking about what age I should start teaching him guitar.

I think three might be a bit too young but maybe four or five? What do you guys think?

I like this as well. This could certainly be developed into a whole song with some lyrics and a melody and may a guitar solo!

Nice work Alun.

I have used VLC- it is a pretty good player and quite versatile. However I don't use it as my main player any more.

No, I know what you mean. This forum is more of a small community at the moment - every member knows every member and contributes to all threads.

I am sure that is pretty uncommon, especially in busy forums.

It's a slow growing thing and hopefully it will carry on growing so do keep stopping back Instructor as it would be a shame to lose you!

Cheers

I like 3 and 4 but I the extra design on the 3 will make it much more unique and original looking.

There are loads of solos that I like. I used to love the solo in Bo-Rap the best but I'm not sure that it still takes the top spot any more.

I love some of the GnR solos and also a lot of solos in Ozzy Osbourne as well as a lot of Queen.

Ah funny, to me it sounded like a 12 string for some reason!

Must be because I had just listened to you other 12 string recording!

(Or I am going mad)

Sounds good to me too - what is this? 12 string through the amp with distortion?

Did you just hit record and played or did you have an idea of what you were going to play before you started?

This is a great thread James - I only imagine how cool it will be to have your own custom built guitar to play on!

It sure is going to be worth the effort judging by the pics.

I wouldn't really even know where to start with building my own!

Nice one Alun - I love the sound of the 12 string guitar. I don't think I have ever even played on before and it is something that I have always wanted to own!

I can sympathise with John not being able to hear it though - I had to have everything cranked to hear it even quietly!

Would definitely like to hear some more 12 string recordings from you!

Yep all good thanks. Both my sons have birthdays next month. One is 3 and the other is 1. It is amaxing how quickly time goes by!

He certainly is very good.
