Yes Alun that is totally rock n roll! Nice one!

You should do us a recording of you playing it and upload it here!

Nasty one there default/sad  Do you think you will ever look to replace it at any point in the future?

I'm not too sure but I guess the key is to go and play some that fits your budget and see what fits with you..

I recently bought a Dean electro acoustic for just under 300 and it is really nice to play. I always find that instruments become nicer sounding and easier to play after they have been worn in from a few months of hard playing!

I did buy a Yamaha acoustic about 10 years ago for about £100 and I still pick it up and love the sound it makes when I play it

I am sure you can find something pretty decent for that money!

You can do loads with the pentatonic scale so you want to try and learn the scale all across the fretboard.

Try and work out the intro to "Layla" there is a cool backing track for that one to play along to!

You should also try to learn the major and minor scales as well which will give you more notes to add to your pentatonic licks.

If I was to do it all over again I would learn the classic pentatonic pattern that it sounds like you are working on, then I would learn the pattern above and below this and try and make solos moving between all three. Then slowly introduce the others and you will then have the whole fretboard covered.

All other scales really add one or two notes to the pentatonic scale or change one or two notes so this understanding of this scale will help you master them all eventually!

Hi James - thanks for the offer. I cannot think of any issues I have at the moment but I will certainly bear it in mind.

I agree here. I also can understand that some people find that learning theory etc can restrict freedom and I think this is correct.

The benefit of learning the notes is that it is much easier to communicate your musical ideas with others or even write down your musical ideas. Also if you know the names of the notes you can easily apply something that works in one place or for one chord, and move it to another place or another chord.

For a while I did get stuck with my playing. I have learnt the pentatonic scale and I could not get out of playing in that box position. I found it incredibly restrictive and demotivating. My playing sounding repetative, and unimaginative it took a long time before I managed to break away from it and make my playing more free.

Take a look at Blackheart Amps by Crate, they are doing a 1watt valve head

These look pretty good and a really good price as well! I would be interested in hearing some genuine reviews before I would consider buying though - have you ever tried on Alun?

I can't see why it would make it any harder unless your hands are fatigued to the point that you loose some of the dexterity.

I wouldn't worry about it at all - its working for you so far so no need to even think about changing anything!

Alun - that is cool. I would love to have built my own guitar - how long did this end up taking and did you have to use specialist tools?

Did you buy the neck or make that also?

Really great pics there and how cool to be able to play a guitar you made yourself.

I always thought that it was really cool that Brian May and his Dad built his "Red Special" guitar that he learnt to play on and used throughout his whole career and, as far as I know, is still going strong!

I play and Ibanez RG prestige edition - I forget the model number.

I bought it based on recommendation and also with the view of getting the best quality guitar for the money that I was prepare to spend.

The shape is not so much my ideal to be honest and I do somewhat regret that though it plays lovely and the colour is great and that really makes up for it.

So I think something that sounds goods and plays well to your style is important for me!

I guess it is just a more controlled sound playing this way. Strumming, for me, is always the whole arm moving but when I want to ring out or emphasise particular notes then it goes right back to playing using the the wrist more than anything!

Good work - did they tell you what the problem was in the end?

That does look a beauty - what was the reason for selling? Just needed the cash or some other reason?

Sorry only just noticed your response!

Did you try it?

I haven't turned my valve amp on now for probably coming up to three years. Now I have my cellar/studio up and running I can be much louder but I am kind of content at the moment with Revalver - especially as I am concentrating on recording rather than rocking out!

I might fire it up next week and see what it sounds like in comparison!

Thanks Polyal - I tend to find a lot of older tunes like black sabbath and early Queen to name a few seem to generally sit slightly off key and I assumed from what Brian May said above that this could be quite common in the production side of things.

When I used to use Audacity I found the pitch shift/time-shift function very useful for exactly this purpose. If it was slightly off I would alter it and save it as an MP3. If I was stuck on learning a song I could import it, slow it down without changing the pitch.

I could not see where to do this in cubase - I assume from what you say the functionality must be there?

is this starting with your finger on the 5th fret of the 6th string?

If so this is the classic pentatonic position and you can probably play a million solos using it!

I really like the JS guitar's shape, it looks pretty cool as well.

I opted for the Peavey Revalver for my plug in of choice which I am finding very good at the moment. Do you just use Guitar rig as a standalone or do you use it to record? If so, do you have any of your recordings you could share with us?

Hi PlayGuitar and welcome to the forum.

You are certainly lucky to have seen him live and you are absolutely correct - I have never heard anyone sound like EJ at all.

That does look a lovely guitar - and I have never actually even played a semi acoustic at all. Terrible I know!

I would love a Les Pual and I have liked the shape of the Ibanez JS model (Satriani) so maybe I could add that to my collection one day!

I don't think I have ever had a taco - looks good though!

I think I have kind of my own sound but I am not 100% happy with it so keep working at it as much as time permits!
