Great - thanks for this. I will give a few a try and see which fits with me the best.

Never experiments with it myself - is it quite easy to grasp playing or is it like learning a whole new instrument?

Egg cartons used to be the main thing here
I always though that the egg carton thing was a bit of a myth!
I guess it does increase the surface area of the wall which must be a good thing!

Re: Nicest Sounding Amp for Lower Volumes (21 replies, posted in Amplifiers)
It is for an electric yes and I would say budget would be £200 - £300 for something if it was going to do the job!

Topic: I Need A New Acoustic Guitar (9 replies, posted in Guitars)
I currently have one Yamaha acoustic guitar and a ovation rounded semi acoustic. The ovation is from the lower end of the range and you can really tell this from the tone and the quality of the components used. It does serve a purpose though.
The Yamaha is nice and seems to have got better with age however it is still pretty low end of the range.
I am now looking at buying something new that is a more professional instrument. I was hoping to spend around £300 on the new acoustic guitar.
Any recommendations? Do you think this budget is enough for something pretty decent or is it worth saving up a little more?

Topic: Nicest Sounding Amp for Lower Volumes (21 replies, posted in Amplifiers)
I love my Marhshall Valve amp but you have to crank it so loud before you get the desired tone it makes it impractical for home use.
So I am looking for the next nearest thing that produces decent tone and sustain at lower volumes.
Currently I am using a Marshall Valvestate amp which I believe only has a valve in the preamp. It is the best alternative I have found but I am not 100% happy with it. I am sure there are better out there but I have limited amplifier experience.
So what amps are you using and how do they perform at lower volumes? I am not talking about being able to play them whilst your kids/partner/parents are asleep in the next room but just not ear blisteringly loud!

Topic: How Do You Record? (3 replies, posted in Recording / Studio)
I haven't done a whole lot of recording but it is something I would really like to get into now.
I have a condenser mic for acoustic and vocals, I have a Shure SM-57 for micing up my electric. I have a USB audio interface with Cubase LE and for drums I am using Beta Monkey drum loops that I drop into cubase.
As yet, with my recent cellar conversion, I have not really had the time to get everything set up to really give it a good go.
I am hoping that I can achieve some half decent results with this set up though I am totaly new to the whole recording idea and unsure about making soemthing that has been reocrded sound professional!
So how is everyone recording and what results do you get?

I am in the process of converting a cellar into a recording studio where I can play guitar as loud as I like without disturbing anyone.
With just floorboards above to the lounge this has not been an easy process.
So far with lots of loft insulation, soundshield plasterboard with polystyrene sheeting between layers I have managed to get it pretty good however there is still considerable sound leakage.
So what else can I do about this? Anyone have any experience with DIY sound proofing?

Re: Elixer Strings and Freedom guitars: (8 replies, posted in Guitars)
In the process of teaching I can be playing around 5 hours per day, and I still get a couple of months from a set
This certainly tempts me, as when I was playing even three hours a day it would be a change of strings once every week. I couldn't seem to stop this even with the more expensive strings so I just went cheap and stayed there ever since.
Perhaps I will give the Elixers a go

I have found this site to be very good and also free!
guitarbackingtrack.com
It even has some tracks with vocals as well - something that all guitar backing tracks should include! Some of these files are just midi files converted to MP3, others are real gems.
Check out Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child o Mine and Back in Black - all three of these have decent vocals on them.

Aren't they the ones with the little coloured ends. Make it nice and simple for those simple ones to see which string is which!
I'm on 9s on electric too though I fancy changing to 10s and dropping down a step on one of my guitars.

Topic: Slash' New Album (6 replies, posted in Guitar Players)
I am a massive fan of Guns N Roses (old lineup!!) and more recently I found that I quite liked a lot of the Slash's Snakepit music.
So I was pleased to hear that Slash was bringing out a new album of which I bought from iTunes the other day.
Regarding the music itself, I do like it. A lot of the songs have grown on me. However the guitar work, moth melodically and technically just do not live up to the guitar work in the GnR period.
Has anyone else heard the album and what are your thoughts?

Re: Elixer Strings and Freedom guitars: (8 replies, posted in Guitars)
Is it the sound/tone the primary reason you choose these?
Often strings for me can be dead in a week which makes guitar playing particularly pricey, so I tend to buy 20 packs at a time of cheaper strings so I don't mind changing them so often.
I have never really noticed too much difference in tone but I haven't experimented that much - so what are your views?
And out of curiosity, what gauge are you both using?

So many guitarists to choose from with varying styles! Satch and Vai have to be up there but not too sure on Yngwie myself.
A lot of his playing kind of sounds the same to me. Perhaps I should give him more of a listen!
