Pedal Signal Flow Confusion
Pedal Signal Flow Confusion
Hey everyone, I’ve been trying to get my head around the best way to set up my pedalboard, particularly when it comes to signal flow. I’ve read a few different approaches, and honestly, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed. I’ve got a few basic pedals like a tuner, overdrive, delay, and reverb, but I keep hearing mixed opinions on the order they should go in. Some say to put the overdrive first, while others swear by having modulation effects like chorus before distortion. I’m just trying to figure out what might work best for my tone without creating too much noise. How do you guys approach your pedal setups? Any tips or rules you follow that have made a noticeable difference? Cheers!

Hey Sam64, signal flow can definitely be a bit of a minefield! Generally, the most common order is to start with your tuner, then overdrive, followed by modulation effects like chorus or flanger, and finally your time-based effects like delay and reverb. The reason for this is that overdrive works best when it’s fed a clean signal, while modulation effects can add depth and character without getting too muddy when placed before the dirt. Experimentation is key though—every rig is different!

Thanks for that, GearNerd! I’ve been trying out the overdrive first, and I think it’s working for me. I’d never considered putting modulation before delay, but I’ll give it a go. Sometimes it just takes a bit of tinkering to find the sweet spot, doesn’t it? Cheers for the tips!
