Does Guitar Weight Really Matter for Long Practices?

Post by sam54 »

Hey folks, I've been playing a lot more lately and I've started to notice my back and shoulders feeling a bit sore after long practice sessions. I play a Les Paul, which is pretty hefty, and I’m wondering if the weight of the guitar is actually affecting my comfort during those long hours.

Do any of you have experience with lighter guitars? Do you think switching to something like a Strat or Tele would really make a difference? I love the sound of my Les Paul, but I can’t help but think that a lighter guitar might let me play longer without feeling like I've been to the gym. Any thoughts?

H I used to play a hefty guitar too, and after a couple of hours, my back would be screaming at me. I switched to a Strat and honestly, it made a noticeable difference. Lighter guitars can really help you get through those long sessions without feeling like you've done a workout!

Totally agree with James - I’ve had my share of heavy guitars over the years, but I picked up a Tele and the weight difference was a game changer. If you love your Les Paul sound, you might also want to try some lightweight options in the same style. There are some good models out there that keep that classic tone but are easier on the shoulders!

Thanks for the input, guys. It's good to know I'm not alone in this! I might have to try out a few different guitars. I do love the sound of my Les Paul though, so I’d hate to compromise on tone for comfort.

I've also heard about some lighter Les Paul models. Maybe I can find one that captures that same vibe? Just not sure if they're the same in terms of sound and feel.

I guess it's all about finding the right balance between comfort and sound. If I can have a guitar that sounds great and doesn’t feel like a brick, I’d be all for it!

Don't forget, the weight can affect your tone too. Heavier guitars can have a different resonance that some players really love. If you're going lighter, just make sure you try before you buy to see if you like the sound! That said, comfort is key if you're playing for hours!
