Noticing Changes After Years of Playing – Am I Alone?

Post by sam54 »

Hey folks, I’ve been playing guitar for about eight years now, and I’ve started to notice some real changes in my playing. I remember when I first picked it up, everything felt so awkward and my fingers just wouldn’t cooperate! But now, my muscle memory is way better, and I can play a lot of what I used to struggle with pretty easily.

However, I’m also feeling a bit lost with my style. I used to stick mainly to rock, but these days I find myself venturing into blues and even some fingerstyle stuff. It’s exciting, but at the same time, I worry that I’m losing my original sound.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of evolution? What long-term effects have you noticed in your own playing? I’d love to hear your stories and maybe get some tips on how to navigate this change.

Hi Sam, it’s great to hear about your evolution as a player! It’s perfectly normal to feel a bit lost when your style starts to shift. Exploring different genres can really expand your skill set, even if it feels like you’re straying from your original sound. Just remember, those rock roots you have will always be a part of you, and you can blend them into your new explorations!

I’ve been playing for about the same time, and I’ve also dipped into different styles. The key is to embrace the change; it enriches your playing. You might find that blending your rock background with blues or fingerstyle can create something uniquely yours!

I’ve been through that as well, Sam. It’s like a musical journey, and it’s exciting to try new things. But don’t worry too much about losing your original sound. Those influences will always shine through, no matter what style you’re playing. Just keep experimenting and see where it takes you!

Exactly, Chris! It's all about growth, and every style you explore can teach you something new. I’d suggest keeping a practice routine that includes a mix of what you used to love and what you’re exploring now. That way, you can maintain your core while also branching out. It’s a good balance to strike!
