Re: Cubase LE4 Question (12 replies, posted in Recording / Studio)
if you route the git channel to a group channel the signal path is automatic
but make sure you are getting a healthy signal into the group channel.....normalise the git track and set the volume at 0db ( automation track - this normally defaults to 0db )
you need to drive the revalver with a decent signal ( check the levels on the control module of the revalver )
they need to be around 0db

i tried each preamp separately and they all worked perfect
the top bit is just to get the initial input and output gains and has nothing to do with
any sounds

Re: New MIDI Keyboard (13 replies, posted in Recording / Studio)
you have to sort the midi and render it to audio first ( using your pro sounding instruments )...then....you can use your
plugs and fx to start ( along with the other parts you have rendered say piano/brass etc )
creating a mix of audio and forming backing tracks or whatever....just use what you need...yes... forget them midi guitar parts and do your own thing ( or if you want to emulate a guitar part listen to the original tracks )
ps you're getting there

Re: New MIDI Keyboard (13 replies, posted in Recording / Studio)
the reason most midi files sound sh!te is because when they were written the composer usesd his own sounds ..when a midi file is exported its at the mercy of whoever receives it and the sounds he uses
thats why its best to render to audio when youve got the sound you want...midi files are great for getting note information of certain songs inc bass lines and percussion if your doing covers..i work a duo and trio
and when a do a fresh song ( backing )i download the midi file and usually have all the parts of the song already worked out...i just then tweak them all and get the sounds sorted to suit

Re: Cubase LE4 Question (12 replies, posted in Recording / Studio)
if you use a plugin on a channel it is only that channel that the plugin effects
if you use an fx channel ...then the send of every individual channel will access that fx..the more you turn up the send on a channel..the more will be processed and you will hear in the mix.... ..the difference is .. if its a repeat echo then everything using it will have the same echo.. ie it is common...the same as a hardware mixer

Re: New MIDI Keyboard (13 replies, posted in Recording / Studio)
midi is the bees knees for any musician...fantastic tool..sounds and and melodies edited on the fly
then when you have the killer bass line ( sound and feel ) always render it to audio..then its permanent
and cant be lost...this is really important as midi data vs sounds is very temporary..you'll never lose the
notes but you might forget where the sound came from

Re: Cubase LE4 Question (12 replies, posted in Recording / Studio)
create a group track ( stereo ) and route the 2 guitar tracks the that group ( in the inspector..the info on the left hand side) insert the plugin on the group track.. it will be applied
to both git channels..you can also pan L or R via the individual channel
if you add an fx track...use the channel ' sends ' to apply the effect...that way every channel can use one fx ( ..but with a common setting )
ps dont worry about duplicating plugins you can use as many as you like

try and play that lick @ the 5th position without using your pinky + i dont like to see a player using his 3rd
finger instead of 4th ...it just looks bad ( amateurish )......just my opinion

Re: Bad Habits (31 replies, posted in Guitar Techniques)
not using your pinky is a real bad habit..and technique ... thats the trouble people watch the named git players and because there not using their pinky everbody thinks its alright not to...wrong...sash should use
his pinky when he's supposed to ..not when he feels like it ( bad technique ) ..watch the top notch git players they all use their
4th finger in a well balanced technique
so ..wherever your first first finger is ( fret wise ) thats the position you are playing in ie if your first finger is at fret 4 you,re at the fourth position and the following 3 frets should be played with fingers 2,3, and 4
as a rule of thumb ( how did the thumb get into it )..this was the first thing i was taught way back in history

Re: New MIDI Keyboard (13 replies, posted in Recording / Studio)
it seems that this is a bundled package...the keyboard has no sounds of its own its just a controller
but when you register it you get the vsti plugs which you can use in cubase ( and.. with any controller if you want to )so register get the plugs and set them up in devices vst instruments etc
midi controllers dont usually have their own sounds..not to be confused with synths which have their own sounds and are also controllers ( if they have midi )
and hair pulling is all part and parcel along with chucking everything through the window ( except the sprogs ) but its all worth it
dont forget with your controller you can play any and all vsti's you can download.. your controller will never
go out of date as far as sounds is concerned

Re: My first go at MIDI (6 replies, posted in Your Recordings)
ive found the 4 front bass not to bad for my style which is a lot lighter than yours..there are some great
bass plugs around you need to experiment to get the sound you want..i.play bass guitar but i always finish
up using a plug..i also use a sampler ( software ) to play back bass samples i have done in the past..so
get a real good bass sound on your bass guitar...sample every other note starting at low E upto say octave A and commit it to a sampler..you'll then have your bass on tap each time ( without having to worry about recording it at each session ) to input via the keyboard with all the luxuries of midi
http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/programs/Shortcircuit/
this prog is medium learning..but you can play any samples back with it..i also use it for custom bass drums/snares/toms etc.....and its zero dosh
directwave is another good wav sampler but thats not free
you can do all your sampling and sample editing ie normallising / compressing etc in cubase..so you can get a dog bllx sound before you commit it to the sampler..once you've set it up you can save it as an instrument
to load at will

Re: My first go at MIDI (6 replies, posted in Your Recordings)
rock on thats really good ..give that to a good vocalist and youve got the start of a good song
thats the intro and verse say...move to F now for a chorus or ???? use your guitar to find a
lift for the chorus when you know where its moving to ...use midi to lay your bass and drums for the foundation for the next part of your song

Re: millions of brilliant songwriters (13 replies, posted in Songwriting on Guitar)
midi is a great tool ( via keyboards esp ) for writing bass lines ,drum tracks, orchestrations etc...i always use midi when songwriting and laying tracks ( or covers )...its very flexible as things can be changed ( sounds / notes etc ) after they have been recorded..and if you cant play keyboard..no problem ..correct your mistakes after...get everything right ..sort your sounds...and render to audio
remember your guitar is the main instrument waiting.. ready to augment any tracks you have already laid using midi
cubase is the keystone of midi seq..and you've got it so use it....anything you want to know about
midi..esp with cubase fire away
ps trying to upload midi example but cant get it to work

Re: millions of brilliant songwriters (13 replies, posted in Songwriting on Guitar)
the better the song the less luck you need...but it has a l lot to do with it
try writing with a singer ( as mentioned on another thread )or at least a second musical person
to get started think of a song you like and start to emulate it (record say the chords first into cubase and then drop a bass line on to it and keep adding bits ) ...as you get into it you will start to get
different ideas and start to diverse until it starts to sound completely original..loads of songs are started this
way....so if you cant started use another song as inspiration
paul mccartney wrote blackbird after he tried to play some classical piece he had heard..he couldn't play
that but look what a fantastic song came out of it

Re: millions of brilliant songwriters (13 replies, posted in Songwriting on Guitar)
he wrote this for his band but tony hatch had other ideas.my co partner recognised this as a hit straight away but this guy has wrote loads of good tunes ( with nowhere near the same success )..he also had a No.1 with isnt she lovely ( steve wonder cover)...he plays the sax on it..he never struggled(s) because he took (takes) his songwriting as a secondary profession ( hobby )
if you,re going to write a song try and write a no.1 it will probably finish up as an album track anyway

Re: millions of brilliant songwriters (13 replies, posted in Songwriting on Guitar)
the aim of every songwriter (99.99%)is to get commercial success..the rewards can be
life changing...a mate of mine wrote ' sad sweet dreamer ' in the 70's ( which i had the luck to ' demo ' )
in a project studio..he's been living off the royalties ever since..i get the odd royalty cheque which buys me a drink about every 10 years ( pubished songs covered by unknown artists on yet to be discovered continents ) The best thing about songwriting is...its a fantastic hobby..and if you can come up with a
' monster ' you'll surely get rewarded for it ( no doubt about it )..and songs can also be ' sleepers ' ie be lying around for years
then suddenly be recognised by some influential nob ed that can shoot it to fame..so keep writing and get it on youtube and generally heard.........and... thankfully... there aren't millions of fantastic songwriters
