Re: Help needed with guitar case (1 replies, posted in General Chat)
if you buy a suitable quality guitar case ( not a bag ) then pack it with bubble wrap
or similar shock absorbing material to stop the guitar from moving about..that should
be sufficient for transporting anywhere with a reputable courier
any part of the guitar should be cushioned from any part of the case with a layer of
bubble wrap or foam or whatever ( even crumpled newspaper )
if you opt for a flight case the same conditions apply ...the flight case should be just that much larger than the guitar so it can be wrapped in shock absorbing material the git being isolated from any part of the case
both options are expensive ( hiring a flight case might be a cheaper solution )
your local courier will probably know the best option

Re: Fretboard oil (21 replies, posted in Guitars)
how does any oil rust strings ( or anything else for that matter ).... the biggest contributor to contaminated strings
is sweat and dirt ...so wash your hand before any session....the most adverse effect of oil is
the ' de twang factor' ie it will soon sound like an old string if it gets impregnated with oil

Re: Fretboard oil (21 replies, posted in Guitars)
ive never used anything to be quite honest i'm not much up on the subject
but in the past i have cleaned and lubricated the fingerboard with light mineral oil ( similar to bore oil i suppose )
didn't know it was a "done" thing
wax though should not be used on anything grained..it gets trapped
and causes rotting

Re: problems with a beginner guitar student - need help (3 replies, posted in Newbie Section)
i think the best way to show someone tab is to place the guitar on their lap and then compare
the fretboard with the tab diagram..yes everything is upside down
but this is tab convention how else can you explain it...arrow pointing up is a down stroke
arrow pointing down is an up stroke yes a PITA
have you checked if shes tone deaf or not ..play a note on the git and ask her to sing
the same pitch...can she tune her guitar without a tuner ?
if she is tone deaf ( hopefully not )....................end of story
anyway ...best of luck and let us know how things progress
afterthought: if tab was invented by a 6 string pedal steel player it wouldn't be ' up stroke ' and ' down stroke ' it would be ' away ' and ' towards '
so try ' away ' and ' toward ' this would remove the confusion of the orientation of tab ( upside down )

....change 'conflict' to preferences
there's more than on way to skin a cat
read post 7 he's been building , repairing , servicing , modifying , designing etc etc etc guitars for over 45 years ( visit his website ) and ask him for yourself .. let experience rule the day
one thing for sure though never use wax

Re: re-setup for switch to lower gauge? (2 replies, posted in Guitars)
If you put a lighter set on the thing to look out for would be the ' relief in the neck ' ie the slight concave bow in the neck...this would decrease since the tension created by the strings would be lower...the action would probably decrease as a result
+ if the relief was low to start with you will get fret buzz
so after the new strings are fitted and tuned to the correct pitch check the ' relief '
if it needs resetting this can be done by adjusting the truss rod
you might be lucky and no adjustments may be needed it would vary from guitar to guitar
this adjustment is not that difficult just follow the vid ( or similar vids )
the action should be back to normal if the ' relief ' is set to what it was for the 10's guage

hi and welcome to the forum
modelling on gilmour is a very good choice ( but put your own spin on things ) ..have you got any originals you can post
in the gilmour style ? ( with your own ilk )
is the cover your own recording or a dubbed over 'off the shelf ' back track ?

Looks like a really good repair job...well done
edit: why put the label back? ...put it safe then if you do ever decide to sell it
you can stick it back on ( if it finishes up on bargain hunt in 50 years time with
the label it will be worth a small fortune )

Re: Greetings from South Gloucestershire (4 replies, posted in Introduce yourself)
fortunately for me i dont use a trem ....i fitted a floyd and blocked it up so its rock solid
and tunes up in an instant ( using the fine tuners and a boss tu2 )
the bridge pu has been replaced with a generic humbucker ( to cure noise issues when recording ) all in all it sounds really good and plays as good as any other git i've ever tried ( 2mm action at the 12th )

Re: Greetings from South Gloucestershire (4 replies, posted in Introduce yourself)
hi martin welcome to the forum...notice you have a mexican strat
i have a japanese strat....i've always wondered what the unobvious differences are.
If a person played a genuine fender strat owned by someone else with illegible marking
on the headstock would they know the country of origin and if not why is there all the hype ( bullshit )
about where the thing was bolted together and the price differences ( esp the us of a )
this is an invite to all strat players to chip in
ps i love my strat ( origin defo not an issue )...i wouldn't even care if it was a north korean
hybrid copy

Re: Tennessee line (3 replies, posted in Introduce yourself)
re : AUDACITY
pros: it will remove most of the vocals except any stereo fx ( esp reverb )
cons: it reduces the track to mono and will remove any other mono components which are panned centre
which unfortunately usually includes bass and certain low frequencies
but for getting a track to practice to it is certainly worth a try
it is a also good idea to get a really good quality stereo sound file to process...
copying from youtube or the internet is not recommended unless the sound is
DBX ( dogs )
