Well thanks again, this is good to know. I might give this a go over the weekend. It will be a good excerise to get me used to things I think!

Great stuff! Thanks - look forward to seeing them

*penny drops*

Ok I think I get it. So basically I could download one of those crappy sounding midi I used to own, import it into cubase, split the different sounds into independent midi tracks then use whatever plugin I wanted to then tweak each instrument so that it became as real sounding as I could get it. Convert to audio, mix it then export and hey presto, you have a quality sounding backing track?

If this is right then I guess the answer would be to lose any midi guitars and record those yourself, use MIDI for the bass, drums and keys/piano parts and job done?

As always, good advice here. Thanks.

Whenever I used to think of MIDI, I thought of midi tracks that I used to download years ago that sounded rubbish. I could never understand how this had a place in today's music or even music back then (say ten years ago).

The last few days my eyes have been well and truly opened.  This MIDI bass thing alone is just going to make such a tremendous difference to my music production and this is just the tip of the iceberg! Already I have been playing around with some other plugins I can use MIDI with, like my ezdrummer and some piano plugin that I am trialing!

Thanks for the links - looks pretty smart!

Do you get quite a lot of business doing this? And, if you don't mind me asking, is it primarily from eBay?

Thanks for the advice - so above you have mentioned two possible ways of doing this.

Are there any differences (other than, if I understand you correctly, the ability to pan individual tracks?)  in doing it as a group or FX channel in this instance or will the result be identical?

I am glad you have mentioned groups as this was another thing I did not understand but trying to take everything one step at a time!

Thanks again!

I am wondering anyone knows the answer to this.

On my Cubase I am using a couple of plugins for my guitar. When I want to add another guitar part I duplicate the track. I have then got two instances of the same plugins running.

I know there is a way that I can have one set of plugins for both tracks to use. I understood this to be a send rather than the insert that I am currently using. I checked sends option but it wasn't clear on how to set this up.

I also have the ability to add a track called an FX track - perhaps it is this? If not, what are these FX tracks for.

Any help would be great - thanks

So in other words you can simply remove valves/tubes from the current amp to get decent tones without having to crank the volume?

And Paul Gilbert - what a fantastic player and musician!

You are absolutely correct. It is bad technique. But it works for him so I guess really there is no issue! However bad technique will not work for most and will result in bad habits that are really hard to break.

So the correct advice would be to use the one finger per fret rule so if you are on first fret then fourth playing fourth fret would result in you using your pinky.

I didn't use my pinky for years, now it works as well as the rest. It took months to build it up. I couldn't be without it now!

What a good mode to be in! One of my most favourite of all time!

I'm hoping to get some MP3 examples going soon enough of what I already know.

Been playing around with my keyboard again last night. Started laying down some drums and bass then got a bit of a guitar melody going on. Will post what I have so far over the weekend.

I am really realising the potential of MIDI now. I recorded a real basic bass line which I was pleased with.  When it came to the melody I realised that the last bar of notes didn't fit too well. Simply went into the editor and selected the notes and dragged them to where I wanted them to be! Fantastically simple and effective!

That is a pretty bad habit! But I think one of the most common!

Once you get OK at the guitar it is easy to stop working on technique and just pick up and play. I don't think this does any harm if you are at a level you are happy with, I think also you will still improve - albeit slowly!

If you want to improve then breaking it down and practicing is the only way IMO!

Have you actually played one of these and do they sound good at lower volumes?? 5watts can still be really loud!

I am currently finding myself playing more through my computer at the moment using the Peavey Revalver MKII which I am getting decent tone from.

I am still keen to get something that sounds great at lower volumes and perhaps your suggestion may be the solution...

Are you UK based?

Can you post a link to your ebay so I can see what you do?

It does make a difference to sound but it is more a matter preference. The best thing to do is to get a thin, medium and heavy and see what suits you best.

I use a heavy pick most of the time, but sometimes when I am feeling crazy I swap to a lighter pick!

Some people like big picks and some like tiny ones. I personally get on well with the typical fender shaped picks.

At the moment I am using the Steve Vai signature picks, mainly because they are this shape but the end is very pointy which makes it great for faster playing!

Thanks!

So what kind of music are you into and how long have you been playing?

Is your engraving service your full time job?

Well I am very pleased and relieved to report that my problem seems to have been resolved. It must have been some compatibility or software issue as I was advised to download the latest automap software, which I must admit, I was skeptical that this would resolve it, but hey presto, keyboard now works!

So looking forward to tonight when I hope to get a bit of time to give it a whirl!

@naciketas - yes my one is USB rather than the traditional MIDI cables

Thanks for the advice.

I do realise that it will not make any sound on it's own. Here is how I set it up:

loaded cubase -ensured the midi in and out were selected in the device setup. Loaded 4front bass as an instrument. Clicked on the monitor button for the track. press keys on the new midi keyboard - nothing - no sounds.

Plugged in my old midi keyboard via standard midi ports (the new keyboard is USB) and without doing anything further I could hear 4front bass playing.

I actually got a new bass module included with this purchase (which I already downloaded and activated and it shows as an instrument) so I tried this in the same way. Also this resulted in the same issue. This plugin loads up a GUI with a picture of a keyboard/synth on the screen. clicking the notes on the screen I get sound. Pressing the notes on the new midi keyboard nothing - again plugging in my old keyboard results in sound when the keyboard is played.

Just to be sure I did the same with EZdrummer which I had working on my old midi keyboard and again it was the same deal.

I thought maybe it was the automap software that could causing the issue. Turning this off is meant to allow the keyboard to work as a standard midi keyboard. It made no difference.

So I am now thinking it has to be one of the following things:

1) incompatible with cubase LE though I am guessing a midi keyboard is a midi keyboard and in its basic form should not have compatibility issues.

2)issues with this keyboard and Vista

3)some kind of conflict with my midi ports on my audio interface that is subsequently blocking the new midi path

4)faulty keyboard

I am going to phone their support shortly and see if they can advise! It is annoying as I wasted a whole evening trying to get this thing to work when I was hoping to be laying down some fantastic rock!

I decided to purchase a MIDI keyboard today that fits nicely on my desk. It is a Nocturn25 by Novation.

Now I am reasonably good with computers but I cannot get this damn thing to work with my Cubase LE.

I can get it to play and stop the track but no sound when I press the keys, nothing at all. With my other keyboard I just plugged in and it worked right away, this one is not.

It must be simple but any ideas anyone before I completely pull my hair out?

Excellent - thanks for this! I will check out some other bass plugins and see if they fit more with me.

Sampling is another thing that I have never even considered doing before. I can see a whole new world of learning opening up at the moment.

Cheers for the advice!

http://www.guitarbackingtrack.com/

It is on the front page of this site as I guess others find it popular too! There are loads of other tracks on here. Some are good, others a pretty rubbish but definitely something to get you started!

I don't really get involved enough with politics to comment but what is your view?
