That sounds really nice to me. It must be very satisfying to eat food you have grown yourself, knowing exactly what has or hasn't gone into the whole process.

I am using a Tascam US-122 at the moment. It is my first audio interface that I have used with a PC

Ok, so I know there is never a right or wrong tempo but I was playing around with Cubase last night and I thought I would get a basic drum beat, try and lay some chords to get inspiration for creating a basic song.

By default Cubase opens with a tempo of 120bpm. To me this sounds too fast but often slowing it down, it seemed to sound too slow and I couldn't find a happy medium.

So I started trying to figure the tempo of some of the songs I was listening to at the time, mainly Thunder. It seemed these were sitting at around the 80bpm - is this correct? Is 80 pretty standard for this kind of melodic rock music?

How do you go about selecting the right tempo for your songs?

I don't specifically agree with it myself. I do not see why the UK has to follow the US and interfere in other peoples business.

That being said I am basing this opinion on not knowing the true and full facts as to why we are there which is why I will never really voice this opinion

Hi Mikey - no unfortunately not! The drum set is only a virtual plugin - still cost a bit but a worthy enough investment to stick on the plastic!

The studio is not really a studio as such, it is a cellar that I have lined with plasterboard to get the best soundproofing, had it plastered and then brought my accumulation of 15 years of equipment to set it up into some form of studio.

I can assure you that the image you may have in your head does not resemble what it really looks like! (perhaps I will post some pics!)

The guitar, well yes I wanted one for ages. I have always been an impulse buyer which is why I am in so much debt! I figured I waited long enough so I had to get one!

I think to a degree the brands lure you into a feeling of trust that you are investing in a quality instrument.

Of course the flip side is that part of your money is not going on the quality it is going on the brand.

I always wanted a Joe Satriani signature model Ibanez guitar. I liked the design etc. When I looked at getting one I realised you could get another guitar of better quality for your money that was not a signature model.

So in some respects I think that the brands can take advantage of their selling power and probably the lesser known or respected brands actually have to make a better product for the money to try and compete.

I would still love a Gibson Les Paul though. I have never owned even this style of guitar before though I know I would love it.

For many years I have tried to record using many different ways using tape 4 tracks, digital multi tracks and recording direct through the computer.

Last year I decided to invest in some proper equipment in the hope that I could get something decent made.

I bought an audio interface as well as a condenser mic for both acoustic and vocals.

I had a few friends round and we had a few beers. It was weird sticking headphones on and hearing everything through the condenser mic - amazing what little sounds it can pick up.

While testing the recording software out I captured some of the voice of a friend of mine. The next day I stuck down some simple chords and a drum loop and this tune was born. At first I thought it was rubbish of course but it has grown on me.

If you are wondering what the on earth he is saying, well, he was talking about the pop shield that I also bought. Somewhere in transport it had got snagged and lit looked like a pair of tights or stockings that had got laddered.

Then he was putting the pop shield on and off the mic to see if there was any difference.

Well I sure hope they do - what kind of styles are you into? Do you have any recordings of your music uploaded?

If so, be sure to post them as I would love to give it a listen. Soundclick is one of many places that you can upload your music for free!

No I have never seen him live either but respect to the man. The most recent DVD I saw contained an interview with him where he has said he is no longer going to try and play note perfectly in favour of more stage presence. To be honest his guitar work seemed to suffer for this and the stage presence seemed very forced.

I think it is one of those things where he knows his weakness is his stage presence and maybe he feels awkward about it himself. but we can all be perfect at everything so he should stick to what he does best!

Cheers - yes I currently have 12s on it! Ouch! Great sound but not versitile enough for my type of playing style.

I have a set of 11s to put on there which hopefully will give me more flexibility without losing tone.

I have previously played acoustics with 9s on though you can lose a lot of tone. However it depends on you objective really!

I have raised this one before but didn't get too much feedback.

I would love to understand a bit more about using borrowed chords within my playing. Often when I listen to music I think, "I like that bit" then when I work it out I realise the reason I find it interesting is in fact there is a chord or set of chords being used that is outside of the key.

One that I have noticed that occurs quite a bit is where the 4th chord of the key (IV) is subsequently followed by the (iv) same chord but minor. This is outside of the key but it works well.

So I wonder what other chords work like this and how I can go about finding them without just trying random combinations.

Secondary dominants is another thing that I see a lot in compositions by Queen and a lot of other artists. I kind of understand the theory but when i try to use them myself, they break the flow of music, rather than add to the excitement of it.

So if anyone does understand these points perhaps you can offer advice on how I can start using both borrowed chords and secondary dominants (and maybe other things) within my music.

Eric Johnson really is a fantastic guitar player. For those of you who have not seen him play, check out youtube and search for "cliffs of Dover", "SRV" and "A Song for Life".

"A Song For Life" is actually the song I am learning to play at the moment on my new acoustic. It really sounds great and if I could play it half as well as Mr Johnson I would be very pleased. He does seem to get every note perfect.

The only negative with Eric Johnson is he has zero stage presence which when he has done with with Satch and Vai during 3G, it kind of doesn't really work so well. But hats off the guy. He can really play guitar!

Actually I did buy myself an acoustic guitar. I got a Dean acoustic, well electro acoustic as it does have the pickup built in though I doubt I will use this much.

It looks nice and plays nice though I think I will be changing the strings to something a little lighter.

I know people have different approaches to songwriting on the guitar. Some come up with a theme first, other come up with a riff and expand. Some start with lyrics, others start with drums and a bass line.

So how do you start your songs? Once you have the start does the rest of the song come easily ?

I see you have had a bit of interest already with still over 6 days to go - what do you hope to get for this amp in the end?

Watermelon John - Do you write your own music?

There is nothing better than a nice crisp beer for me!

I have recently been setting up my studio after my cellar conversion. One thing that I have never been happy with is the lack of drums.

I have tried many different approaches to drums including the Alesis SR16 - this I didn't get on well with. Then I got a electronic drum kit - I am no drummer and when I realised that I was not a natural drummer I figured I didn't have the time t learn a whole new instrument.

I then found some decent drum loops - Beta monkey. This is what I have been using recently, just dropping the loops into Cubase and repeating them or dropping in a fill. However I have still found this pretty limiting.

Yesterday I discovered EZdrummer which is a VST which I can use within Cubase. The drum sounds are great and the drum loops sound pretty good too - the great thing about this is that it seems really simple to use, change tempos, alter drum beats etc.

So does anyone else use this for recording? Or if not, what do you use for your drums?

Can you not access it here?

I still buy certain books personally. It can be frustrating when trying to learn, for example, some Eric Johnson and slowly work through the faster parts to only find it is actually wrong.

Having said that I have found many tab books to be incorrect as well.

Ultimate guitar is certainly a great archive. Even got the app for the iPhone which is great for on the move.
