I really enjoy books and videos by Danny Gill.

He is an awesome player and teacher.

Rock lead basics
Rock Lead Performance
Rock lead techniques

These are all books every guitarist should own

I think it is all a matter of preference.

There are some rules most follow though - yours is correct to have the delay at the end

I usually put the delay and chorus pedals in the effects loop of an amp. This way I can use the amps overdrive without muddying the delay or chorus.

Wow that is some amp although my issues are the other way - I want to get a tube amp to sounds good at low volumes!

Wouldn't like to have to pay to replace all those valves too often!

I use 9s -

I love how light 8s are but you lose too much tone. I love the tone of 10s but they are not so nice to play. 9s are a happy medium for me.

Yes I agree here as well. You need to know music theory to become a real good player. And if you want to work with other musicians then you wull certainly need to know the notes and chord names and how it all works together

Yes here in the UK there are a few good bands althouhg I am a distance away from London so only really go and see them if they come loacally - most big bands do not

I had to travel 150 miles to see the D - they did rock though

Yes waming up is important. I must admit I do not tend to do this and it has resulted in some hand injuries before that meant I could not play guitar for a few weeks.

I am much more carfeul these days

Yes practice everyday - even if its for a short time.

Practicing 20 minutes each day is 100 times better than 5 hours on a Saturday!

I started when I was about 8 but didn't play much. Took guitar lessons from about the ages of 10 - 12 then didnt really play until I was 18 then practiced hard from there!

I do hve a keyboard which I know a bit on. Used to play the Piano many years ago which gave me a good start for understanding music.

Don't really play it much now though

In fact I must point out that a lot of tab books are inaccurate. I was very disapointed in my GnR tab book to find parts missing or incomplete or just blatently wrong!

It's hard to find good accurate tabs on the internet. Most are incorrect. I have seen simple songs tabbed in the most awkward of positions.

I thin it is good to use a tab to get some bits but most will come from listening to the son which is best practice to get the right rhythm and timing.

Here is a question - Who have you seen live?

I have seen

Joe Satriani
Steve Vai
Paul Gilbert

Queen (with Paul Rogers)
Razorlight (not by choice)

Tenacious D (they rock)

and also quite a few recent tribute bands - some of which are fantastic

UK Guns n Roses - this guy looks and sounds like Axl - I loved this show - felt like getting up and close to the real GnR

The Great Pretender - Queen - Really good show - the Brian May looked, acted and sounded like the real thing.

The Freddie was very good too - takes a real singer to sing like that.

Yes you are correct

Jimi Hendrix though I think is a little different.

Without him, the guitarists such as Joe Satriani and Steve Vai would not even have thought of picking up the guitar.

It's hard for someone my age (26) to imagine life before the rock guitar was invented but I am sure there are people who do remember that time.

These people appreicate Jimi the most

I find the days I ner break a string - the go dull and rusty and I change them. I usueall buy ten packs at a time so I change them regularly.

I get the packs that come withan extra E nd B string in case you break them. As I never break them I have loads of spare E and B strings so if anyone needs any - give me a shout!  default/big_smile

I think this one is very hard to define as what makes a best guitarist?

It's definitely not the speed at which they play, sure people can play fast but that is not music. That may qualify for the award of fastest guitrist.

I personally think the best guitarists are really the best musicicans. The best guitarists are those who create music with their guitars whether it be with their chord progressions or with their solos.

THis is why there is not definitive best guitarist. Sure Steve Vai creates strange sounds with his guitar and very fast instresting phrases but then Joe Satriani creates intrigueing melodies (still with fast solos)

Then you have Brian May who is not only a great live guitarist but has the ability to harmonise his guitar with delay pedals to create and orchestra.

Kyle Gass from Tencious D to me is a unsung guitar hero. take things back to basics - this guy can play the acoustic in a lovely manner.

So there isn't a best guitarist. A lot comes down to taste in music.

If you are new to guitar then I would say speed is not everything - I wored hard to get good speed to find that it was not what I had hoped - Make music not a fast blur of meaningless notes

I'm not quote sure what you mean by learning notes - as far as I see

There is playing by ear

playing by tab

Playing by notation

I do not think playing by notation is essential with the guitar as guitarists are lucky that they have tab available.

Having said that, It is important to know the names of the notes you are playing.

Start with learning just the names of the open strings and move on from there.

I am glad you have brought this point up.

Fingers do hurt the first time you play, maybe for the first week - after then you will build up tolerance and it will never hurt again - that is..........

I am very bad - I have not played guitar for about 1 month due to work commitments. I played guitar last night and my fingers hurt for the first time in ten years! My hard skin on my fingers has started to go!

I must get practicing more!

I do love the Ovation guitars for the fact that they are so comfortable to play.  Perhaps not all ovations have the rounded type back but not having such a bulky back really enhances playing.

I wish I had spent a bit more and not gone for the budget model as the guitar could play *much* better than it does if it was set up correctly and more expensive components used.

Great tip.

Especially if you have to bend using your third and fourth finger.

I always would use my first, second (and third when avialable) behind the finger doing the bend.

This gives the most accurate fluid bend and allows you to hold it in a steady stable fashion
