Thanks a lot!

When I was younger I used to take piano lessons, even with the guitar I always visualise the piano. A few years ago I got a keyboard and got back into playing it. It has midi - it is a little too big to sit on my desk so will be looking to get something more compact but it feels almost natural laying down drums and bass lines on the keyboard so really good stuff!

At the moment the forum will only allow mp3 uploads. I will work on midi files also being allowed though as I am keen to see what you were attempting to upload!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I have many more ideas for something better than this. Initially I was going to try and just lay down the repeating C bass and give examples of the different modes over the top of it. However, last night I ran out of time and just did that little improv!

@Polyal - I found the bass a bit uninspiring to be honest. I had the same when I plugged in my bass guitar also. As a non bass guitar player I am wondering if maybe I should be using some effects to beef it up? I currently am using this for the bass:

http://www.yohng.com/bass.html

It sounds as good as recording my bass guitar into my audio interface except with this I can play the bass line on the keyboard, edit it, move it, copy it etc so I am pleased with this versatility  but need something so make it sound more like a bass! - any tips or recommendations?

I'm hoping to get a few free hours this evening to get back onto cubase and get some other music down!

Ok this is very poor but I am going to post it anyhow

I tonight laid down my first ever midi on the drums and bass guitar.

[mp3]/uploads/d9cda9ae4e6b4ec2924613fbfa934dc3.mp3[/mp3]

Very basic but a start...

Thanks Polyal - I do intend to do this though I kind of don't plan when I am able to play, usually it is when the children have gone to bed and the mrs is happy on facebook I get to sneak away and start jamming!

Tonight I have got my midi keyboard out - I have never used midi before and it seems like there is a whole world of possibility with this - especially when it comes to laying down drums and bass.

Do you have much experience with using MIDI?

That's good as you could very quickly be playing AC/DC and it sounding pretty accurate! I think there is a decent backing track of back in black which I will try to locate the link for you!

Well done for getting your own way!

There is literally thousands of resources online for learning the guitar and I for one, and I am sure I am not alone here, is more than happy to help you out on this forum.

What kind of stuff do you want to get started with?

I think that is the coolest thing I have heard in a while.

Just to be able to enjoy writing as a hobby and get a couple of your tunes out there to the extent that most people will have heard them! And on top of all that, keep getting royalties!

I guess that his other material is as good as if not better than these songs but along with a good song, you need a lot of luck to get the music out there and be commercially successful?

I must get started with writing! I'll aim for number one as you suggest though I will be happy enough that my first song has been created and won't be too disappointed if it doesn't make an album on this occasion!  default/lol

Wow that is pretty impressive. So your mate, did he write a lot and struggle to get any success then along came this hit? Did you know it was going to be a hit once it was written or did it just take off?

Really interesting stuff there - thanks for sharing!

Personally I would like commercial success with my songwriting (if I ever write anything) but more importantly for me I would really like an album to make my stamp on the world, commercially successful or not!

polyal wrote:

i think £350 a year is a lot more than the average song writer in the UK gets( £350 more )

If a song becomes a commercial success ie used by some famous artist or gets into the charts then I assume the money comes flowing from this?

What about if your songs gets used on a TV series or in a film -  I assume that you would get decent rewards from this?

I guess if your song does not make it into the above categories then you would be lucky to make anything at all from it.

Polyal - you seem to know your stuff about music production, would you think this is correct?

And in answer to your question, I don't think there are enough brilliant songs to be written!

I have no idea but I know it is popular here in the UK. I got into the brand following the likes of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani

Hi James

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately I cannot advise on this guitar! Hopefully someone else can!

Olly

Ha ha I was reading a debate about this only yesterday. Some said locrian but others disagreed saying it was aeolian with a flattened fifth in use. It doesn't sound locrian to me.

I have quite a fee guitars and my collection is not yet complete. Ultimately each purchase is an improvement so I really play one electric and one acoustic (and a really cheap bass for recording)

I would like a 12 string and a classical guitar which I would use for different purposes.

I currently primarily play my ibanez but I have always wanted a les Paul which would be my last expensive guitar purchase. May be some time away yet before I can afford that!

Not on food. But almost everything else!

I hope someone can help out here with regard to modes.

I understand modes, I understand their sounds, I understand how to use them over a vamp etc but when it comes to applying them musically I struggle.

If we are in a major or minor key it would seem that we have all chords of the key at our disposal. However when trying to play in a modal key other than the above it seems that you can only use a couple of chords before losing the modes tonality.

So perhaps someone can explain to me how I can use more than one or two chords to maintain the modal sound. Here is an example.

C Lydian - a really lydian sounding vamp is C - D

It sounds lydian, it is easy to solo to lydian but chuck in another chord and it doesn't sounds lydian any longer - at least not to me.

Any mode experts out there?

I like this. It is a good idea! I need to get my guitar and see what some of these sound like!

I think a girl with them hands!

I musts say, I do like this song. The solo really inspired me to learn lead guitar!

Oh and if you do not like the fact that the forum jumps to chat on your first visit, this is also disabled in the profile setting of your user controls.

If it annoys anyone too much then I can remove this function! Please give me feedback if it does need improving!

@saravedi Welcome to the forum though please start your own thread!

@PattonRocks - sounds great - hopefully you have some in MP3 format that you can upload here so we can hear your stuff?

I enjoy all sorts of music though primarily rock . I am currently listening a lot to Thunder which I have only just got in to recently. My favourite all time bands are Queen and Guns N Roses (original lineup) and I love the likes of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

It would be great to hear more about your music and your writing process. One of the things I have always struggled to do is writing my own music and it is something I really want to do!

Check out this post where I explain my issue

And here is the only two original things I have ever recorded and these were some time ago!

Check post 7 http://forums.ollysguitar.com/topic/737/test/

Look forward to hopefully hearing some of your music and your songwriting processes!

I did teach guitar for a while but I ran out of time due to family and work commitments.

It would be great to actually work making music or playing with a band etc.

Do you write your own music at all?

I am pleased to announce that I have simplified (I hope) the posting of Youtube videos into the posts.

forget using tags, forget doing anything other than inserting the link of the Youtube video and it will automatically add the tags and format the URL in the correct way!

I hope this makes things easier for everyone!
