I have a Marshall JCM900 head and 2 x 12 cab - This is too loud for home use

I bought a Laney LC15R - 15 watt valve amp but again this is just too loud for normal home use.

I now use a Marshall valvestate amp at home. This goes very loud but is also good at lower volumes.

I love my Ibanez but I am starting to feel I would like to play and own a Les Paul - I have not played one before but I love the look of them.

When I was learning the guitar I developed two bad habits which took me a long time to break.

One was the fact I never used my pinky (little finger) to fret any notes. This meant that whilst my other fingers were building in strength the pinky was getting weaker.

This turned out to be a major problem when I started learning Satriani numbers as you *have* to use all four fingers.

The other was that I did not always use alternate picking so I had to relearn this.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Yes I think that it right. Guitar music and bands in general are getting more popular which is great for the guitarist.

I didn't have the benefit of learning from anyone else. i had to do it on my own and looking for resources on the internet.

I think it would be much easier if you have someone to guide you through and ensure you do not pick up bad habits.

Here are the chords

Perhaps you have already found this as its only the chords and not the tab itself.

Hope it helps anyhow.

I don't know of any specific software - Do you use Audacity to record? i'm sure this must have some free plugins?

A good cheap way of recording effects is to use something like the Behringer V-amp or even better the Line 6 Pod.

This will allow you to get a much better recording sound without having to mic up an amp.

Ok here is a challenge for you all.

Who can explain what a secondary dominant is and what its function is in music?

Steve Vai is amazing. He is truly a Doctor of the guitar.

I hear he used to go to sleep listening to music to help him transcribe it. That is dedication!

I think you should practice at a relaxed time of day. Take 20 minutes and go and work on your skill.

First I would advise you try to learn a couple of chords from a simple song such as Wonderwall by Oasis.

Then once you have mastered chord changes move onto learning scales and melodies then solos.

When G3 came over here to the UK they had Robert Fripp as the 3rd member - this was a wrong choice I thought. He didn't fit in to the rock guitar criteria and people booed him off the stage. I felt very sorry for him.

I went to this mainly to see Satriani but I was amazed at Steve Vai's set which was absolutely amazing - in fact better than Satriani.

If you can get to see Dr Vai live you will not be disappointed.

Nickleback

Great Tune!

I have only played my guitar live once when I was in middle school . It was Cats in the Cradle by Ugly Kid Joe.

I was so nervous I have never played out live since! Got a great cheer though which was nice

I really enjoyed going to see Queen with Paul Rogers. I was not lucky enough to see this band live when Freddie Mercury was alive.

This was the closest thing. Paul Rogers is a tremendous singer and I love his work with Free and Bad Company.

It was really good to see Brian May and Roger Taylor - It's a shame that John Deacon didn't want to join.

I would love to see some of those bands live!

A good way to start is to work out the first chord of a given song.

Most of the time the first chord will be the key. So if the first chord is a C then the song is likely to be in the key of C Major.

Usually in music the first and last chord will be the same. This is not always true as  there can be key changes within songs

I would think that they do have a place in developing speed but I wouldn't just restrict yourself to chromatic exercises.

Work on scales and scale patterns to build speed.

Hi Treepot

You are correct. It is indeed an artificial harmonic.

To do this, as you go to pick a note, allow your thumb to slightly touch the strings. If you do it in the right place you will get a high pitched noise - this is a harmonic.

Doing this in different places you will get different notes.

Joe usually does his scream by 2 harmonics at the same time on the B and G string.

He brings his left hand to the whammy bar and dives the bar then brings it back up and above the original pitch.

Amazing stuff
